Berkheide

Project Berkheide

Dunea supplies drinking water to nearly 1.4 million people. For 150 years, it has relied on three dune areas, including Berkheide. As the population in the western part of South Holland grows, so does the demand for drinking water. Berkheide must supply 7 billion liters of water annually to meet this increasing demand.

Water supplier Dunea, operating in South Holland.

The challenge

Combining nature and infrastructure

Working in a Natura 2000 area requires great care for the natural environment. That’s why Dunea combines its drinking water mission with nature development. The results are becoming increasingly visible. Numerous mitigating measures are needed to prevent damage to the environment. It’s a complex undertaking—one that requires close coordination with the contractor to achieve a well-aligned approach. During the 2024/2025 work season, the focus within Berkheide (extraction site 6.1) has been on upgrading drinking water installations, creating a new water body, and nature development. A large part of the work, including all nature development, has been completed. Due to some technical setbacks, part of the work on the extraction site near the large water body has not yet been completed. These activities will continue in the next work season, from August 2025 to March 2026. The main focus will be the renovation of several water extraction installations. On the northern edge of the project area, new pipelines still need to be laid and the associated extraction wells renewed. Since the site is a protected Natura 2000 area, work is only carried out outside the bird nesting season, from 1 September to 1 March. The goal is to complete the work by 1 March, so that extraction site 6.1 can supply clean and reliable drinking water for the years ahead, while also allowing nature to continue developing.

Our strength

That’s why Infraproof

Infraproof provides the technical project lead for extraction site 6.1. This project lead acts as the key link between the internal organization and the contractor on site. Throughout the entire process, they help ensure that the work is delivered within scope and budget. With our experience in the field, we’re confident this will be a success.

This makes us proud

We’re helping nature move forward while contributing to the promise of sufficient, clean drinking water for residents. It’s a beautiful project—one we’d gladly take a detour for. Especially in our free time, because a walk through Berkheide is definitely worth it.
