Project HOVASZ

The municipality of Aalsmeer is committed to strong accessibility. It aims to make its villages accessible to everyone. A fast public transport connection with surrounding municipalities in the Randstad is essential. The same goes for Schiphol: the airport will become more easily accessible. The HOVASZ project focuses specifically on bus transport. A former provincial road is being converted into a dedicated bus lane, along with the necessary surrounding infrastructure.

This project is a collaboration between the VRA (Amsterdam Transport Region), the Province of North Holland, the Municipality of Aalsmeer, the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer, and the Municipality of Uithoorn.

The challenge

Complex living environment

The provincial road cuts through landscapes and urban areas and connects to other (high)ways. It’s a busy region in the heart of the Netherlands, where people live, work, and relax. To realize the new design, many cables and pipelines also had to be relocated. A complex challenge in a complex environment.

Infraproof coordinated the project from start to finish. We identified risks and ensured smooth collaboration. We tackled both technical and financial challenges, such as cable and pipeline bottlenecks. During execution, it became clear that some of the utility relocations had to be done differently than originally planned. Another challenge arose when the design at one location was adjusted in such a way that a guided bore would fall outside the influence zone of the new bicycle tunnel’s sheet piling. Together with the IPM team and the contractor, we found the right solution in close consultation with the utility companies. Thanks to our strong project management, the project was delivered on time and within budget.

This is what we’re proud of:

The dedicated bus lane crosses straight through a large number of roundabouts — a unique design solution that’s still rare in the Netherlands. Nature was certainly not forgotten! Hedges and trees were planted along the route, and the central islands of the roundabouts have been beautifully landscaped.
