Project Kaagbrug VenR Structures A44

Rijkswaterstaat is working on the future of the A44. It’s one of the oldest highways in the Netherlands, and several structures along this route have reached the end of their service life. One of them is the Kaagbrug, the movable bridge over the Ringvaart canal in Haarlemmermeer. This bridge no longer meets structural safety standards and will therefore be completely replaced.

The client

Rijkswaterstaat

Working together for a safe, liveable, and accessible Netherlands. That’s Rijkswaterstaat.

The challenge

Building on busy transport routes

Constructing a new movable bridge on a busy road and waterway requires precision and tight planning. The A44 must remain as open as possible to traffic during construction, while also allowing continued passage for ships. That’s why a phased approach was chosen. The first part of the new bridge is built while traffic continues to use the existing bridge. Once vehicles can cross via the new section, the old bridge is demolished and the second part is built.

This phased construction ensures both safe traffic flow and presents a technical challenge. Both the temporary and final configurations must meet all standards and regulations. It’s a complex interplay of disciplines—from civil and mechanical engineering to electrical systems and traffic management.

Our strength

That’s why Infraproof

Infraproof coordinates and manages the preparation and execution of the project. We lead the multidisciplinary project team on behalf of the client, enabling us to provide optimal support to the contractor. With our experience in phasing and technical coordination, we ensure seamless alignment between design and execution.

This makes us proud

The new Kaagbrug will be a future-proof, sustainable connection over the Ringvaart canal. A technical feat in a complex environment—and a new point of pride for the A44.
